This shows up a lot in English songs as well (see e.g. They use metaphor and are less literal than usual. Rather they are perhaps more poetic than the reading material you're used to. None of them sound particularly Classical nor do they seem particularly difficult from a grammatical perspective. I took a brief look at your linked lyrics.
I guess this is the beauty of the chinese language?ĭo you native speakers out there struggle with understanding these lyrics? Would I need to get a good grasp of such songs / lyrics before I can consider myself to be "fluent"? How would one translate such lyrics into english in a way that would make sense and still capture the meaning? If you put these lyrics into english on google translate you can see that it doesn't make sense / doesn't flow. I assume it's supposedly some form of ancient chinese or "Shakespearean" chinese, so to speak.Įnglish is my mother tongue and i almost never see any modern day songs with lyrics with this sort of complexity (in english). It seems like Chinese songs often have very hard to understand lyrics, especially those with 古风 style. I'm HSK 6 and I feel I have a solid all round grasp in Chinese already, but when I come across these sort of lyrics it just seems like a completely foreign language at first glance. Songs like the well known 芒种 and some other examples 芳华慢 渡红尘 诗意游鱼 瓷意千年 多情种 as well as almost every song by "音阙诗听"
